Psychiatrist
1986
Clay
12 × 10 × 8"
I made Psychiatrist in the 1980s in response to reading about the appalling behaviour of the psychiatrist Dr Ewen Cameron at a hospital in Montreal. I read that unbeknown to his patients, he had been sponsored by the CIA to experiment on them causing irreversible brain damage for some, death for others. My piece was put in the window of the Uffundi Gallery on Sussex Drive a location that is close to the parliament buildings in Ottawa. I had hoped some passing-by MPs might have their outrage over Dr Cameron’s behaviour reactivated, jolting them into re-igniting the overly long drawn-out legal case. Other MPs who might not have heard of Dr Cameron might see it and would hopefully want to know more. But as it happened, an MP and his wife who sadly already knew far too much about Dr Cameron, having had their lives ruined by him at that hospital , saw the clay sculpture in the window and bought it.
Court cases from claimants in this case continued to be challenged into the 2020s.
